Everyone can exhale… Benji and his boyfriend are still together.

The internet is great at stripping something of its context. It might be what it does best. You'll be scrolling along, minding your own business, then you see an innocuous-looking post by a couple on Valentine's Day that has over 20 million views. Huh? What's so special about this post? What am I missing? But contextlessness is where the internet thrives. And a meme is born.

Last year, on Valentine's Day 2025, a post that read "first valentine's together " attached with two photos: one of the couple in question, the other of the meal they were about to share (some sort of vodka pasta and wine), went astronomically viral, and not everyone could explain why. It seemed like an exceedingly normal post, simply sharing a nice couple's moment. But Twitter did what it does, and made a mountain out of a molehill. Commenters went in, analyzing every single aspect of this post. They analysed their pasta choice, their wine choice, the way the photo was composed, the couple themselves… and everything you could possibly think of. The meme seemed to mean something different to everyone else, and that was the point. They were a blank space onto which you could project anything. That's what the best memes are. So when Valentine's Day was approaching this year, the internet began to wonder whether or not their favorite couple was going to make an appearance on Twitter again. Some were anxious that they might not have made it a year; others wondered what they might be cooking up in 2026.

Sure not to disappoint, Benji and his unnamed boyfriend came back this year, this time with steak. Sometimes, when a meme is recycled or reclaimed by its owner, it can lose some of its luster. It seems cheap to bring it back, and it seems like a cash grab or a desperate plea to stay relevant. Not this time. They waited until it was appropriate (1 year later), and they delivered exactly what the internet wanted to see. Twitter responded in the perfect way, over-analyzing every aspect of these photos once again. Why had they chosen steak? Why were there extra croutons on one plate? What's going on with the stain on the table? Pure, meaningless fun. Something that the internet needs a little more of these days.
